Photo of the Week

As the heat of summer roars in, I prefer to remember cuddly December days.

226 days til’ Christmas… But who’s counting? ;)

Tea Party Engagement

May 12, 2011 by Lorie 2 Comments

Because I’m still on a Royal Wedding high and not ready for it to be over, today’s design board is inspired by a British tea party :)  How adorable would this be for an engagement shoot?! I mean, seriously, every guy looks good in a vest, and when paired with a bow tie? Perfection!

Jade Earrings by Simon Tu, Topman Bowtie, Sweater Vest by Threads & Heirs, Asos Bracelet, Green Slingbacks by BHLDN, Garden Dress by Anthropologie

Lauren + Spencer = ?

May 10, 2011 by Jensey 12 Comments

In January, we had our first-ever mentoring session with our past bride, Jamie (aka the stunning supermodel bride from the Sarasota, FL gallery on our main website). Jamie contacted us when she decided she was interested in becoming a professional photographer and asked if we do mentor-ships. We jumped at the chance of having our first one be with a past bride who we loved, and before we knew it, Jamie made the drive to Nashville to pick our brains.

As nervous as we were because we had no idea what to expect, I think it actually went pretty well. The first part of the day consisted of “classroom” time at our dining room table (keeping it classy, folks!) where we discussed everything from why we use the camera gear we do to the importance of a blog and anatomy of a wedding day. Jamie insisted our shoot be with her best friend Lauren who was close to having her first baby. We shot her maternity session around the Parthenon here in Nashville, and I loooooved it. You long time readers may remember I’m a bit squeemish around pregnant women and their bellies! I was actually nervous about leading Jamie through a maternity shoot, because in our five years of shooting, we’d only shot one!

Lucky for all of us, Lauren is practically a model herself and can work the camera like no other. Seriously… Pregnant or not, I’d photograph Lauren any day! She was perfect because instead of spending so much time on posing and setting up the shot, we could kinda throw her into “autopilot” and focus on talking Jamie through the shoot.

FAVORITE!

Lauren’s one request: A photo of her hands and her parent’s hands on her belly. :)

Jamie in action!

Lauren, thank you sooooooooooooo much for being such a great sport! Jamie, I hope you learned a lot and I’m so excited to watch your business grow! Love to both of you girlies!

9th with Nathan : I need help

9th with Nathan

Remember that time I had a monthly column? That was a fun three months. =\ For the past six, usually around the end of each month, Jensey kindly asks if I think I’ll have a column available for the upcoming 9th. I always assure her I will, absolutely no problem. And then the 8th brings about an awkward silence and perhaps a nervous laugh. And the 9th a subtle, yet knowing chuckle from Jensey. Sadly, the past few weeks have been no different.

I’m sitting here in the Chattanooga Airport (tethered via wifi to my new, super-awesome Nexus S) and wishing I could find my list of “9th with Nathan” topic ideas. I was going to write simple tips about taking better photos, but that post would be pretty lame without examples photos. So that’ll have to wait for another month. I don’t want to be in this same spot two months from now, though, so here I am, begging you all for ideas. I’ve already covered our favorite lenses, how to buy stuff online, and some best practices for managing your data.

What would you guys like to talk about? It can be anything from wedding day workflows to, oh I don’t know, it’s your job now! =P What have you been dying to know from the Roots?
